Nelson De La Nuez: A Conductor of Art

As seen in The Villager on December 8th, 2023. Article by Avalon Bellos

Nelson De La Nuez, also known as “The King of Pop Art,” is iconic for his narrative painting pieces that dissect the modernity of society with notes of irony and aspiration.

De La Nuez comes from Cuban and Californian backgrounds that formulated his early years in the arts. He looks to Roy Lichtenstein as his main influence, with post war pop art emulsions and modern satirical portraits.

De La Nuez ascended to artistic fame in the 1980s, and now remains in the homes of famous collectors, actors, musicians, like Kelly Clarkson and Kim Kardashian, and more around the world. Similarly, his work has graced the halls of luxury retailers like Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, and Nordstrom, stamped with his notable aesthetic.

As Avalon states in her depiction of Nelson and his mark on the art world, “change, growth, and evolution define the relentless undertow of his artistic odyssey… a maestro of imbuing deeper layers into familiar visual tropes, ceaselessly updates his themes, mirroring the ever-shifting cultural landscape while preserving the sanctity of the references he appropriates” (p. 23).

See his work on display in all five of our gallery locations.
