Singer Song-writer John Mellencamp expands his artistry

John Mellencamp, American singer and song-writer, has expanded his artistic scope to encompass not just music, but drawing and painting. He is highlighted in The Villager as a ‘conduit of expressionism,’ giving German Expressionist style a new meaning. As a lover of the arts, he approaches his canvases with the same brilliance he does with his music: technical brilliance and intricacy with a tough, rock and roll exterior. “Without question, Mellencamp is otherworldly in his ability to transpose music into visual art and yet oddly humbled by his role as the conduit for beauty” (A. Bellos, 16).

John Mellencamp as a visual artist was a development that occurred before he was established as a leader in the music industry. His mother was an artist, an oil painter, and he grew to love the beauty of brushstrokes and dipped paintbrushes at a young, impressionable age. His current brushworks embody a similar feeling of his music; a raw , unfiltered and unapologetic style that “serves as a poignant reflection of the quintessence of American existence” (A. Bellos, 16).

Wether Mellencamp’s poeticism is heard through the sounds of strumming and melody, or is seen on the canvas in masterful brushstrokes or abstract concepts, he is a gifted artist and one we are very grateful to have partnered with at DTR Modern Galleries. His works will be available for viewing at DTR Modern Soho beginning November 5th. Reach out to [email protected] for further information.
