Art as an Escape with Halim Flowers
As seen in The Villager on February 9th, 2024. Article by Avalon Bellos
In 1997, young Halim Flowers found himself in the unforgiving coils of the criminal justice system. Wrongly sentenced to two life terms in Washington DC, Halim spent several years contemplating his purpose and passions and his will to right the wrongs he has faced, and in doing so, better the greater society.
Once released from prison in 2019, Halim has since refused to be defined by the injustices inflicted upon him, and has used art to relay his profoundly inspirational experience and messages.
Behind bars, he honed his artistic craft transforming the darkness into luminous works of spoken word and social commentary to the universal human emotion and experience. He now translates his poetry onto the canvas, reflecting street art techniques from icons like Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat.
Halim Flowers has recently been recognized by international communities and has announced his representation at one of the world’s most prestigious art conventions, the Venice Biennale. As he prepares to introduce his latest masterpieces on a world stage, “Flowers stands as living proof that even in the darkest of times, the human spirit has the power to transcend adversity and soar to unimaginable heights” (Bellos, p. 17).
Works of Halim’s are currently on display at all DTR Modern Gallery locations (Boston, SoHo, DC and Palm Beach).
