The Flesh of Icons: Kozo in Boston

As seen in Dans Papers, released April 9th, 2025

Kozo, this week’s Dan’s Papers cover artist, has entered the cultural lexicon with mythic thunder, vibrating at the frequency of something greater than art itself. We are so thrilled to have been his first gallery representation and now to get the pleasure in hosting him for solo exhibition in our Boston gallery on May 16th.

Kozo has distinguished himself in the art world through his devotion to practice and ritual of creation. He honors the origin of tattooing, echoing the breath of Japanese irezumi and other ceremonial traditions, woven seamlessly into the visual architecture of contemporary fine art. His painting are marked by meditation and precision, each stroke deliberate and perfected. He is both a master technician and a visual poet. As eloquently spoken by writer Avalon Bellos, “His works evoke the silence of temples, the chaos of street life, and the tenderness of ancient ceremony, all within a single frame.”

Kozo will make his Boston debut at the flagship DTR Modern Galleries on Friday night at 167 Newbury Street, from 6 to 8 pm. Our space will transform into a sanctum of color, movement and myth, showcasing his masterwork in tattooing, painting and print work. RSVP ([email protected]) to join us in meeting the artist and browsing his new collection while enjoying luxury refreshments and a curated live soundtrack.
