The Essence of RETNA
As seen in The Villager on February 23rd, 2024. Article by Avalon Bellos
Born Marquis Lewis, later establishing his identity as RETNA, was born in 1979 amidst the urban development of Los Angeles. His involvement with the art world stemmed from the inspiring metropolitan cityscapes, as he watched graffiti transcend its limiting connotations and later joined in on the movement.
Spray paint is RETNA’s primary medium which he uses to infuse canvases with an arrangement of symbols - “a fusion of archaic scripts, hieroglyphs, and iconic signs. This tapestry of meaning seamlessly integrates Egyptian, Hebrew, Arabic, and Asian calligraphies with contemporary script, fabricating a mosaic of expression that surmounts the confines of linguistic barriers” (Bellos, p. 17).
As a contemporary American artist renowned for his pioneering work in the realm of urban art, RETNA’s accomplishments are a testament to his talent and prominence. He has been commissioned for high-profile collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton, Nike, and Chanel. His work can also be found at global museums and galleries, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
We currently have a piece by RETNA on display in our SoHo gallery.
