Art’s Own Wonderland: Mr. Brainwash

As seen in The Villager on September 8th, 2023. Article by Avalon Ashley Bellos

The Villager highlights world-renowned street artist, Mr. Brainwash and the “sublime absurdity” of his artwork and presence in the art world. Thierry Guetta, aka, Mr. Brainwash is known as “the great appropriator;” he is a curator of chaos, a mastermind of the absurd, and a living testament to the subversion of the art world’s established norms. He began his career as a filmmaker, documenting the lives of street artists like Banksy, and in doing so, his muse became his inspiration and he became a street artist himself.

His first solo exhibition and artist debut was in 2008 with “Life is Beautiful.” He plays with pop culture references, pop art, and street art iconography in his mixed media works, creating a diverse collection of pieces from Warhol portraits to oversized sculptures made of trashed household items, to iconic collaged works depicting Banksy’s ‘Balloon Girl’ and the Brainwash monkey.
