In the mid-20th century, as the world healed from war and consumerism boomed throughout the country, the Pop Art movement took the center stage. In the contemporary world, it is artist Houben R.T. that is creating work which richly reflects our modern obsession of excess and wealth.
Born in Bulgaria in 1970, Houben’s art career went from classically trained to boldly unpredictable. In 2000, he moved to New York City and became recognized for his romantic symbolism, impasto application, and erudite understanding of historical propaganda.
Houben has a real penchant for historic majesty. From images of Abraham Lincoln to Audrey Hepburn, the saturated colors are passionate, reverent, and intoxicating. He combines the elements of the renaissance, impressionism, realism and a touch of pop to produce mosaic beauty.
