The Great in-Between

As seen in The Villager on March 1st, 2024. Article by Avalon Bellos

Born and bred in Raleigh, NC, Clarence James’ artistic voyage led him to Howard University and then ultimately to the bustling streets of New York City and street art. Clarence James is a self-taught artist, a true testament to his unyielding determination and talent, unbound by the confinements of the modern day art world.

As the first gallery to discover Clarence, we have now been working with him for four years and have watched him progress into an authentic, successful space. His works merge the abstract with the figurative, compelling viewers to peer beyond the borders of perception. His newer collection are symphonies of color, form, and symbolism, speaking to his personal narrative, driven by cultural heritage, experience and societal critique.

Avalon describes his work as “culturally significant. Some of his work is reminiscent of African masks and figures embodying the ceremonial essence of ancestral and divine identities. His paintings are also a contemporary call-to-arms, echoing the subversive nature of graffiti and rebellion - a testament to the artist’s bold rebellion against conventional artistic norms (Bellos, p. 17). Each of his pieces resonates with a dialogue and he urges his audience to connect with his message through his portraits.

We consistently have James’ work displayed in all of our gallery locations, so please stop by to browse.
