The Art of Disruption with KAWS

The Villager highlights the one and only KAWS on the cover of this week’s newsletter, as well as on page 16 discussing the impact he has left on the art world. At first glance, KAWS’ art may appear to be a celebration of pop culture icons but beneath this playful facade lies a subversive subtext that defies superficial interpretation.

He takes recognizable imagery and stripes it down to its bare essentials, exposing emotions, vulnerabilities and our subconscious, removing the polished techniques of our society. He pushes his audience to engage in introspection and connect on a deeply emotional level. Not only limited by his sculptures and painting, but he finds his way into vast bodies of work in other media including toys, clothing, massive inflatable installations and more. KAWS is making a mark on our world, and is a prominent contemporary artist who’s worth an attentive eye.
